Welcome to the inaugural entry in MamaMick’s newest series highlighting talented writers. Today’s guest is the beautiful and talented, Marissa Bergen. She shares her interpretation of the love letter category below.
More to come about Marissa at the end of the post, but first a reminder of the subject:
Lil Mama’s Love Letters: Do you have a love letter penned in your heart? To a child? A parent? Your adoring spouse? The one who got away? Whether it’s to someone in your life now, or someone who used to be – write to them and seal it with a kiss in this space. They never have to know…unless you want them to.

Grammatically Yours
~~By Marissa Bergen
What is this paper that I see
That is marked with my name
It’s folded up in my book bag
Like a paper airplane
Closer I inspect to find
It’s a barely coherent
Letter to profess to me
The terms of your endearments
But what it is I’m looking at
Is no less than a mess
And clearly the apostrophe
Should go before the S
I really think that you should check
Your use of your and you’re
You’ve gone farther not further with me
Than anyone before
There are commas where your periods
Really should be at
And I am pretty sure that we
Can’t literally do that
The way you use their, there and they’re
Is really not okay
And if my mother saw this well
She’d just faint dead away
So I unfold the creases hold
The letter to my chest
Because you know the good girls always
Like the bad boys best
Notes from Michelle: I’d planned to hold this poem until the November 9 post date, but I couldn’t wait! Her poetry is the kind to make you think without completely hurting your head. Marissa’s quick and quirky reads are what I reach for on Monday mornings instead of coffee.

I am a married mother of two living in Burbank, Ca. In another life I was a singer and bass player of a punk-edged rock n’ roll band. My blog is mainly autobiographical poetry which spans my wild adventures of being a Brooklyn born rocker who took my band from the streets of New York’s East Village to the lights of Los Angeles and how I have come to integrate that into life as a mother. Fun poem, Marissa. I loved all the grammatical references. They made me laugh since I’m always searching for those mistakes in my everything I read.

Hi Char,
I just had to come back and tell you that I look for the same grammar mistakes all of the time. How ironic that I pulled a ‘your’ vs “you’re” blunder while commenting….on Marissa’s site!! She produced this little number AFTER I made the blunder–coincidence? I think not!
Love Marissa. Thank you for stopping in the read her. xo

I bet Marissa forgave you instantly. These tiny comment boxes are easy to make errors in because they’re hard to read before you hit send. (Or maybe I just need to break down and buy reading glasses instead of being vain and the problem will go away)

We don’t need no stinkin’ reading glasses do we? I just need smaller fingers and maybe not to be still laying in bed and typing sideways when I first get up in the morning.

You’re right. Slap me silly for even bringing up those dang bi-focals.

Thank you Charissa. I told Michelle that her your/you’re error had little to do with the inspiration for the poem. Still, don’t think she will ever live it down.

Hee hee. Only a writer would cringe and feel embarrassed by your/you’re error. It’s our curse.

Marissa is hands down my FAVE blogger so I had to come hear …. (Whoops HERE!) to read and comment right away. I hope word gets out of her magnificent melodic magic and she’s freshly pressed ASAP. Thank you for featuring her hilarious wit! Ps. When I perused online profiles with dating websites, I’d actually take screenshots of the ones with grammatical errors and correct them in red pen, then send back to the authors. I was heavily sought after…. As a proofreader, not a lover. 😉

BAHAHAHA! I love that you peruse the online dating profiles.
I totally share your fandom spirit around Marissa. I almost peed my pants when she said yes!
Thank you so much for hopping over hear (HERE!) to visit. I love having new friends over.
Have a great week 🙂

Thanks for coming here to celebrate my feature Stephanie. I can only imagine your popularity with dating sites everywhere! You know, there’s actually some kind of Youtube series called Your Grammar Sucks where you can submit grammatical errors you find on the internet and they’ll review them with a few witticisms. My son is constantly looking for something to submit although I think his schoolwork may qualify.

I am writing with squint eyes and note, after midnight. 6 hours till alarm goes off. . . Because Marissa is worth saying something about!! Never end a sentence with a preposition like I just did. Ha ha!
Your grammatically correcting poor young man cracked me up! You are able to create poetry with sarcasm and irony while still gently poking fun. I like this quality in you, Marissa.
Great assignment from this site, you know I started out on a search for love on my blog, (match.com) then started writing love stories, now just life in general. Someday I will come back when work is slow and attempt a love letter. It may be slightly funny but nothing hilarious like the rock star, Miss M’s.

Grammar be damned!!! (When it’s love or….lust?)

Probably lust more the case here. It was meant to be written from the perspective of a young girl.

Lust. So many things are disregarded in the name of lust. Grammar is no better.
